The first release of 2022, A122 comes in at a relatively high proof for the brand. With the higher proof, it also brings a fair amount of heat throughout and more notably an unexpected earthy mix not characteristic of the brand. The deviation may catch you off guard, and combined with the swathe of heat makes for a bold sipper. Being a wheated bourbon, the standard 92 proof version is a sweeter, easy sipping affair. While barrel proof batches have been released since 2020, the brand still hasn’t quite found a consistent flavor profile. Instead, the variation from batch to batch is more extreme, and with that, somewhat exciting. While Batch C921 really impressed, Batch A122 surprises. It’s a bold adventure in flavor, but a bit hot at times and not what you would expect for a wheated bourbon with its underlying earthy notes. That being said, those looking for a bolder bourbon will find a lot to love with Batch A122.
