While bourbon was just in its infancy when George Washington died, even as a rye drinker, he likely would have found a lot to enjoy with this release.
Espy House is a non-distiller producer located in Bedford, Pennsylvania. The company’s name is derived from the Espy House, which is an actual house that is best known as where George Washington stayed during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. The house’s present owner is Todd Eichelberger, who brought history full circle with the launch of Espy House whiskeys. In 2023, the brand launched two new whiskeys: George 1794 and Washington’s Reserve Bourbon.
The bourbon being sourced from Bardstown Bourbon Company and not being labeled straight is a combination you don’t see too often. While it might bring initial thoughts of trepidation, those are instantly put to ease the moment you pour a glass. Classic bourbon scents waft out of the glass with each of the scents present contributing equally to the aroma. This classic flavor profile moves through the rest of the sip, with bold sweet cinnamon leading to a sweet and spicy midpoint that pushes into the finish. The ending of the whiskey is pleasing but short as the spice quickly ramps up and fades, coming to an end all too abruptly. Overall, this is a good showing by Espy House, and true to its roots, just like George Washington.
The bourbon in review comes from barrel number 6, bottle number 90.
