Straightforward and to the point, Buzzard’s Roost introduces their bottled in bond offering to the market at a price point that’s a head scratcher.
Buzzard’s Roost was created and started by Judy Hollis Jone and Jason Brauner, the latter being the owner of the influential Bourbons Bistro in Louisville, Kentucky. To create their new bottled in bond bourbon, the company sourced bourbon from MGP in the fall of 2018 and aged it for 5 years. As they do with most of their whiskeys, the bourbon underwent a secondary maturation. In this bottled in bond’s case, the bourbon was re-barreled Buzzard’s Roost Char #1 barrels at Bardstown Bourbon Company before being bottled in early 2024.
Buzzard's Roost Bottled in Bond Bourbon Batch 1 embraces a back-to-roots bourbon mentality when it comes to its flavor profile. Never veering too far away from what you’d expect from a younger high wheat bourbon, the sip displays readily identifiable flavors. It starts with a basic nose displaying scents of oak, vanilla, caramel, and honey. The midpoint and finish display various forms of peppercorn spice along with commonly found flavor notes. Overall, this is a straightforward sip that’s hard to find fault in. However, for $72 I certainly expected more definition from this bourbon, especially considering the secondary maturation it underwent.
The bourbon in review is bottle number 0441.
