Drawing attention to batch numbers is a great way to market distinctiveness, but with Batch 8, Bulleit plays it safe.
We haven't heard much from the bourbon side of Bulleit Bourbon in a while. This year saw the release of Bulleit American Single Malt, Bulleit Rye 10 Year, and Bulleit Rye 12 Year, but while their bourbon products remain popular, excitement around them seems subdued. This might be why there is a push from Diageo to draw attention to the batch numbering on Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Strength Bourbon labels. It worked for many brands, especially brands like Booker’s Bourbon and Barrell Bourbon that helped lead the way for such marketing.
Over the years, despite its being a sourced product, Bulleit Bourbon releases maintain a pretty consistent flavor and quality level, which applies to both their standard 90 proof and cask strength versions. Though Batch 8 seems to be missing some of the fruitier notes I enjoyed in previous batches, it works well as a fall bourbon, as it’s flushed with all of the flavors that remind you of the season: caramel apple, cinnamon, blueberry pie, baking spices, maple, and nutmeg. It’s sweet-leaning, but spice plays a role throughout, especially during the bourbon’s finish.
Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Strength Bourbon Batch 8 does provide a slight tweak from batches before it. Thanks to its spice notes, it would probably make a great fall cocktail as it's bold enough to stand out in any drink. On its own, it still makes for a decent sipper, but there isn’t much to get overly excited about. Its price remains steady and overall, it's a safe buy. However, for anyone looking for a more unique pour, there are plenty of craft options around the same price range to dive into that will leave a more prominent lasting impression.
