For this pick we partnered with Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems.

Like our first Traverse City Whiskey Co. single barrel pick, this pick is a collaboration with Bourbonr. We sampled remotely, with the guidance of Traverse City Whiskey Co-Founder Chris Fredrickson. And we actually took two cuts at it! Multiple sample sets were sent out...and in our first live recording we realized we were tasting different sets of barrels!

We regrouped, zeroed in on our favorites from those sets, and took a second cut. The barrels came in at different ages, but we didn’t know the details for tasting, something Traverse City Whiskey Co. keeps close to the chest so that tasting can be truly blind. After tasting through the samples Chris revealed the distillation years of the three samples - 2012, 2013, and 2014. Surprisingly, we chose the 2014 distilled barrel! All 21% rye MGP distilled bourbons, the bourbon was just shy of 7 years old and was aged in a Kelvin Cooperage barrel. Before bottling, we let the bourbon rest just a little bit longer to reach the 7 year mark.
