For this pick, we partnered with Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, last year we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems. As Black Button embodies craft distilling, Seelbach’s was an ideal choice as a partner for this pick.

Not only is Black Button Distilling a craft distillery that should be on everyone’s radar, it also hails from a place the three of us once called home and incidentally our shared birthplace - Rochester, NY. Black Button Distilling is located at 85 Railroad Street, an urban location right near the heart of the city. Black Button was founded in June 2012 by 24-year-old Jason Barrett, owner and head distiller. The company draws in local grains for their spirits, and offers a wide range of whiskeys, among other spirits.

For this pick we were presented with two uniquely different bourbons. One was aged in a 15 gallon barrel, while the other in a 30 gallon. Both were distilled from Black Button's four grain mashbill. Both barrels exhibited heavy fruit characteristics, with a punchy delivery expected at barrel proof. However, one of the barrels maintained a better balance, and offered a nicer mouthfeel with a thick, oily consistency. We made our choice and then looked at which was which. Surprisingly, it was the 15 gallon barrel! Much like we’ve found with some other 15 gallon barrel aged bourbons recently, it was just the better pour.

For the custom sticker, we decided on a Watchmen theme featuring Doctor Manhattan, a fictional character with an almost god-like persona and abilities. Black Button Distilling is a company still in its infancy, and as a result one to watch as they continue to morph and create new and interesting products. The “we’re being watched” theme is a nod to the idea that Black Button is a distillery to watch. And for those who are familiar with the recent Watchmen/DC Universe events, we threw in some minor easter eggs for you too.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Punch of fruit | Pear | Apricot | Grain | Toffee | Punchy

Palate: Surge of spice | Cinnamon | Dark fruit | Light oak | Leather | Oily texture | Sweet & punchy

Finish: Sweet fruit carries over from palate | Spice surges again & lingers
