Finger Lakes Distilling is located on the southeast side of Seneca Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes wine region, not far from Breaking Bourbon H.Q.. The brainchild of Brian McKenzie, the company was one of the earliest craft whiskey distilleries in New York, having started operations in 2007. Finger Lakes Distilling uses locally sourced grains for their products, and produces a variety of different whiskeys and liqueurs, with the McKenzie whiskey brand being what they’re best known for.

In June of this year we ventured out to visit the distillery and taste some of their aging barrels, which included a range of bourbons, ryes, and malts. We have been long time fans of their wheated bourbon, so picking a 6 year old double barrel wheated bourbon with rich, enhanced flavors was an easy choice for us.

And then there’s the rye. 9 years old. Distilled from two grains. This one will surprise you. It’s got sweet undertones throughout and a delicious candied raisin note at the midpoint. Spices interweave through the sweet notes to a satisfying degree. It’s a rye you won’t want to miss.

Tasting Notes:

SBC #108 McKenzie Single Barrel Double Oaked Wheated Bourbon Barrel #2592 - Aged 6 Years

Caramel and cinnamon are joined by light citrus and a hint of roasted malt. On the palate, ripe pear, vanilla cream, and white pepper are delivered with a rich, creamy mouthfeel. A hint of sticky bun on the backend spills over into the finish, which brings waves of caramel and brown sugar complemented by whispers of baking spices and seasoned oak.

The aroma is surprisingly sweet, with brown sugar, apple butter, vanilla syrup, and candied raisin up front. The sip brings rich brown sugar, more defined candied raisin, and caramel chews accented by an undercurrent of baking spices. Peppery seasoned oak picks up during the transition from palate to finish, which gives way to clove, leather, and a hint of apricot. The finish is long, with warm lingering spice atop a tapering sweet base.

About Seelbach’s

For this pick, we partnered with spirits retailer Seelbach’s, which was founded by Blake Riber, also the creator of Bourbonr and the Bourbonr Facebook group. An online-only retailer with a twist, we interviewed Riber to discuss how he’s running his shop differently than everyone else. “Unlocking Craft Spirits” he calls it - seeking out up-and-coming craft distilleries and learning about their process and tasting through their products to find hidden gems.
