According to the company’s press release, Single Cask #6 is a 208 bottle, cask strength release sourced from Frey Ranch. The follow up to Lost Lantern 2022 Single Cask #3: Frey Ranch Distillery Four Grain Bourbon, Cask #7 is a three grain bourbon that focuses on the elimination of wheat in order to double down on its rye component instead. While the grains in the mashbill may have been tweaked compared to Cask #3, the end result is just as unique for this true estate distillery bourbon.
The sip opens on an incredibly interesting nose. With scents of both traditional summer and fall aromas, it’s so different from other bourbons in the market, it keeps pulling you back in to figure out just what aromas are present. A combination of dried apricots and spice with fresh grain and new oak continues the uniqueness factor. The finish is more straightforward, and is the first time that the bourbon actually shows its full 118.2 proof. The cask chosen by Lost Lantern highlights one of the most original and unique craft bourbons I've had in a while. Crisp, clean, and slightly youthful throughout, Cask #7 has me excited for future Lost Lantern selections from Frey Ranch.
