A distillery-only limited release that takes some risks, Jack Daniel’s Toasted Maple Barrel Rye is a whiskey that needs to become an ongoing product.
If you’re someone that is interested in all things American whiskey, then you’ve probably taken notice of Jack Daniel’s over the past few years. As we’ve detailed before, the house of Jack has lowered their guard and allowed themselves a bit of risk taking. Sure the company has their flavored whiskeys and cocktails in a can products, but Distillery Series #8 shows just because “maple” is in the whiskey’s name, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take this whiskey seriously.
Using their rye whiskey as the base, should be the first trigger that there’s more going on than meets the eye. I’ve noted how fantastic Jack Daniel’s rye whiskey is plenty of times in the past. According to the press release, Jack Daniel’s classifies this as part of their “Distillery Series line of experimental whiskeys.” This makes sense to see the use of a rye in something experimental such as using ex-maple barrels, but for the company known for their Tennessee whiskey, it's still surprising they decided to use their rye for this, especially since almost everyone else likes to pair bourbon with maple finishing.
The result is surprising. The high toast, no char maple finishing barrels imparted a very delicate layer of maple to the rye. Jack Daniel’s Rye is fruit-forward and when paired with maple it gives off a dessert-like taste of french toast topped with mixed fruit salad. It’s every bit as delectable as it sounds.
