This is a small limited edition collaboration release from Bardstown Bourbon Company highlighting Carter Cellars, comprising only 10 barrels and totaling approximately 2,700 bottles. Distribution includes the Bardstown Bourbon Company gift shop and select Kentucky retailers.
As with many of Bardstown Bourbon Company’s blends, the base for this whiskey is interesting as it combines bourbons and a rye distilled across three states and ranging in age from 6 to 17 years. Finishing for 14 months in ex-cabernet barrels is a relatively lengthy finishing time, and as noted in the press release, the barrels were freshly emptied, filled, and then rotated throughout the rickhouse numerous times. The result is a rich and complex finished whiskey that highlights dark fruits, but integrates aged oak and savory flavors to a satisfying degree. Its chewy texture on the palate is worth pointing out, and it persists into the whiskey’s long finish. The end result is a whiskey that delivers a delicious sip that’s not to be missed.
While Bardstown Bourbon Company distills their own whiskey and has increasingly introduced it into their products, this release blends whiskeys distilled elsewhere. Their Collaborative Series releases are never boring, and this particular one is certainly worth seeking out.
