Press Release

To celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Barrel Global’s Lost Mashbill Project will produce a limited batch of bourbon designed to evoke the style and flavour profile of an American spirit produced nearly a century ago. Distilled by Castle & Key Distillery under contract for Barrel Global, these barrels will be available exclusively to clients of Barrel Global.

To create bourbon in a post-Prohibition era style, the project draws inspiration from historical documents and bourbon production practices of the early twentieth century. The recipe was uncovered by Murray David Harwich III, a sixth-generation descendant of the family that founded the former Old Taylor Distillery in 1887. Murray made the discovery while searching the archives of his family’s estate.

Murray David Harwich III, Leader of Experience at Barrel Global, said: “It’s been incredibly exciting, and personally fulfilling, to bring this lost history back to life with Barrel Global. They have been great stewards of early bourbon history, committed to making high quality bourbon, while preserving the story and the heritage that brought us here.

“Researching early bourbon history has felt a little like treasure hunting, because I was aware that I could uncover something that hadn’t been looked upon or used in decades, but which could allow me to carry forward that work.

“When I found the mashbill recipe, it wasn’t immediately apparent that I’d struck gold, because it appears like a casual, handwritten scribble. For the uninitiated, it might be mistaken for a shopping list or some cryptic notes. To a distiller, it’s the instructions to unlock a lost mashbill and a flavour profile that hasn’t been explored in nearly a century.

”Further research into archives provided additional clues as to how bourbon was produced during this period, informing the production process for the Lost Mashbill Project. Heirloom grains have been sourced from Walnut Grove Farms and custom barrels made from naturally-seasoned, air-dried wood have been sourced from Kelvin Cooperage, with the aim of producing a heritage-style bourbon as authentically as possible.

George Koutsakis, CEO and founder of Barrel Global, said: “We’re thrilled to revive this old recipe and to offer our clients such a unique piece of living history, a heritage bourbon crafted with early twentieth-century methods and the rigour of modern distilling.

“The Lost Mashbill Project exemplifies the ethos driving Barrel Global: to pay respect to bourbon’s great heritage on which we stand, while engaging fresh perspectives and presentations through our creative partnerships.

”Barrel Global allows patient spirit enthusiasts the opportunity to purchase both rare and mature, or new make, tequila, bourbon or whiskey. Throughout their journey of exploration, barrel owners can oversee the maturation of their spirit, the design of the bottle and packaging, and either bring it to market, or resell the barrel when the spirit is mature.

The inaugural release of the Lost Mashbill Project will be offered exclusively through Barrel Global. Each barrel will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence while showcasing a historically-inspired approach to bourbon production rooted in early twentieth-century traditions.
