The OBSV recipe provides the base for a solidly structured and interesting bourbon. Consisting of 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley combined with the “V” yeast strain, it’s known for providing a beautiful blend of fruit and spice. In fact, this is the same recipe found in every standard 100 proof bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel.
With this specific selection, the familiar OBSV caramel and vanilla scents greet the nose, though they’re joined by touches of bananas and citrus fruit. Beginning with a light viscosity on the tongue, the bourbon makes its way into the cavities of the mouth, giving way to burnt brown sugar and a hint of sweet fruit engulfed in a torrent of aged oak. The aged oak dies off in the finish, which is punctuated with a delicate peppery cinnamon note followed by long lasting remnants of sweet summer fruits.
If I had to choose a favorite Four Roses recipe, OBSV would probably be it. It generally yields a very traditional flavor profile, rounded out by sweet fruits and a creamy mouthfeel. Talking with master distiller Brent Elliott, he’s described various recipes as the “workhorses,” as opposed to the flavoring recipes, and OBSV is one of them. However, despite having the exact same mashbill and reasonably similar age(s), each OBSV barrel I’ve tasted brings it’s own subtle nuances along with it.
This particular private selection is especially interesting because it diverges from the more standard light fruitiness characteristic of the V yeast strain into more heavily-bodied oak notes. While caramel and vanilla tease on the nose and hints of fruit elements add depth throughout, this is hands down a more oak-focused bourbon.
Although the proof is 14 points higher than a standard single barrel release, it drinks very closely to its 100 proof siblings. I welcome this trait as the alcohol is anything but overpowering.
Although this diverges from the full-bodied fruit elements and creamy mouthfeel I’ve grown to love about the OBSV recipe, it’s quite interesting. Considering the decreasing number of available bourbons with more age and more oak in the flavor profile, those seeking more prominent oak characteristics will appreciate this particular one of a kind bourbon.
